Sacred Walks in Essex: Explore 14 Spiritual Journeys
ABOUT THE WALKS - Essex is a deceptive, remarkable and surprising county, Although “flat” it has a remarkable coastline and many river estuaries and many islands. Here the Viking’s and Roman’s came. Later, in the 6th. century, saints from Lindisfarne came to bring christianity to the south-east, with St. Cedd. There are numerous ruined Abbey’s and Priories tragically dismantled by Henry &th., but whose remains remind us of the skill medieval man.
These walks, some short and some long, explore the wealth of
medieval ruins and architecture that litter the Essex landscape. The
walks bring you to exceptional churches, see historic chapels, and the
foundations of Britains’s first Christian church. Other walks bring you
local saints, such as St Osyth and Marion churches, such as at Ulting.
Others are pilgrimages to exceptional abbeys, such as Waltham
Abbey. On the minus side you pass the sites of where Protestant
Martys were burned at the stake in the 16th. century and later the much maligned 17th. century witches, with Essex being the Witch county of England - see Separate guidebook. Other walks bring you to the oldest log church in
Europe at Greenstead, to Chelmsford Cathedral, and to the finest
Abbey and Priory gatehouse’s in Europe.
All are places of great importance to Essex life and story. All are
places to pause, stop, appreciate and be in silent wonder. All have
their unique story to tell. Simply, set off with an open mind, expect
nothing and let the miracles unfold as you walk along.
